I am too young to remember Carlisle when it was illuminated by Mercury. The town center was iluminated by fluorescents, main roads in and out of carlisle look to have been lit by MBFU lanterns. Although I do remember one remaining Thorn Beta 4 still in service illuminating a country lane, this was removed in 2004. Up until recently I thought that there was no more Mercury lanterns in use in Cumbria, how wrong could I be! Many towns and villages in South cumbria are still illuminated by mercury, Grange over sands, Arnside to name a few.
I have been very lucky over the past 10 years or so to be able to collect some nice examples of this light source. The only lantern that is iconic to me is the Thorn Beta 4.
The following is a list of lanterns that I have managed to collect over the years. Thanks to Paul Turnbull from Cumbria County Council. Without Paul's help I wouldn't have these lanterns in my collection
